Bona fide meal periods (typically lasting at least 30 minutes) serve a different purpose than coffee or snack breaks, are not work time, and are not compensable.
In Nevada, state law requires that employers provide employees with a meal period of at least 30 minutes if they work a continuous period of eight hours. This meal period is unpaid unless the employee is required to remain on duty. Additionally, Nevada law mandates that employers must provide a paid rest period of at least 10 minutes for each four hours worked, or major fraction thereof. This does not apply to employees who are covered by a collective bargaining agreement that provides otherwise. For minors, Nevada law stipulates that those under 16 years of age must not be employed for more than five consecutive hours without a meal period of at least 30 minutes. Employers in Nevada must adhere to these state regulations, which are more specific than federal law. Federal law does not require meal or coffee breaks but does require that short breaks be compensated. In Nevada, employers must comply with the state's more stringent standards for meal and rest breaks.
