Bigamy is the act of marrying one person while being legally married to another. Polygamy is the practice or custom (often religious) of having more than one wife or husband at a time. Most states prohibit a party from having more than one marriage license at a time, and in most states bigamy is a crime.
In Idaho, both bigamy and polygamy are illegal under state law. According to Idaho Code § 18-401, a person who has a husband or wife living, who marries another person or continues to cohabit with another person, is guilty of bigamy, which is a felony. This law makes it clear that it is not permissible to be legally married to more than one person at the same time within the state. Additionally, Idaho does not recognize polygamous marriages for any legal purpose, and such practices are not allowed under the state's legal framework. The prohibition of bigamy and polygamy aligns with federal law and the laws of most other states, which also do not recognize or allow multiple simultaneous marriages.
