Travel refers to a person’s movement from one location to another—whether across a city or town; from one city or town to another; from one state to another; or from one country to another. Travel may be for business purposes or for personal purposes and often requires motorized transportation, such as planes, trains, and automobiles.
In Ohio, travel regulations encompass a variety of laws and rules that govern how individuals can move from one place to another for both business and personal reasons. For motorized transportation, drivers must comply with Ohio's traffic laws, which include speed limits, rules of the road, and requirements for vehicle registration and driver licensing. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) oversees these aspects. For air travel, federal regulations by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) apply, and for train travel, regulations by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) are relevant. Additionally, Ohio has laws regarding operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs (OVI), and seat belt and child restraint laws to ensure safety on the roads. When traveling between states or internationally, travelers must also adhere to federal laws, such as those enforced by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), as well as international agreements and protocols.
Whether for business or pleasure, travel encompasses a variety of legal considerations that often go unnoticed until a problem arises. Today, we’ll take a look at some of these legal issues associated with travel.
