Parking tickets or citations may be issued to the owner of a motor vehicle when the vehicle is parked illegally. For example, a parking ticket may be issued to the owner of a vehicle parked:

• in front of a fire hydrant

• in front of an expired parking meter

• in a no parking zone

• in a place that blocks a sidewalk

• too close to the curb

Parking tickets are nonmoving violations that usually have less serious fines and penalties than moving violations. For example, in many states a parking ticket may not cause penalty points to be added to your driver’s license or record.

In Massachusetts, parking tickets or citations are issued to the owner of a vehicle found to be parked in violation of local parking regulations. Common violations include parking in front of a fire hydrant, at an expired meter, in a no parking zone, on a sidewalk, or too close to the curb. These are considered nonmoving violations and typically carry fines that are less severe than those for moving violations. In Massachusetts, parking tickets do not result in penalty points being added to the driver's license or driving record. However, unpaid parking tickets can lead to additional fines, the inability to renew a driver's license or vehicle registration, and even the towing or booting of the vehicle. It's important for vehicle owners to address parking tickets promptly to avoid escalating penalties.
