Driving safety courses—also known as defensive driving or traffic school—are designed to improve a driver’s knowledge, awareness, and attitude toward driving a motor vehicle. Laws vary from state to state but in many states a driver who has been issued a traffic ticket or citation may have the ticket or citation dismissed upon successful completion of a driving safety course—whether online or in person.

In Indiana, driving safety courses, often referred to as defensive driving courses or traffic school, serve as a tool for drivers to enhance their driving skills and knowledge. Indiana law allows for the use of these courses for various purposes, including the dismissal of traffic tickets. Drivers who receive a traffic citation may be eligible to have the citation dismissed by successfully completing a state-approved driving safety course. This option is typically available once every three years. The courses can be taken online or in person, and upon completion, the driver must submit a certificate of completion to the court or the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) as proof. Additionally, completing a defensive driving course may also result in a reduction of points on the driver's license and potentially lower auto insurance premiums. It's important to note that eligibility for ticket dismissal or point reduction may depend on the nature of the traffic violation and the driver's previous driving record.
