Driving safety courses—also known as defensive driving or traffic school—are designed to improve a driver’s knowledge, awareness, and attitude toward driving a motor vehicle. Laws vary from state to state but in many states a driver who has been issued a traffic ticket or citation may have the ticket or citation dismissed upon successful completion of a driving safety course—whether online or in person.

In Delaware, driving safety courses, commonly referred to as defensive driving or traffic school, are recognized as a means to enhance a driver's skills and safety awareness. Under Delaware law, drivers who have received a traffic violation may be eligible to have their citation dismissed or points reduced on their driving record upon successful completion of a state-approved defensive driving course. The course can be taken either online or in person. Additionally, completing such a course may also qualify drivers for a mandatory reduction in their automobile insurance premiums for a period of three years. It's important for drivers to verify their eligibility for these benefits with the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or the court handling their traffic citation, as there may be specific conditions or limitations based on the nature of the traffic offense or the driver's history.
