Most schools for students in kindergarten through high school (K-12) have policies that prohibit students from leaving the school grounds or campus during school hours. If students do need to leave the campus they will usually be required to be picked up by an adult (age 18 or older) who is on the student’s emergency contact list and who shows identification at the time of pickup.

For a doctor or dentist appointment schools may require a note from the health care provider for the student’s absence to be excused.

In Virginia, K-12 schools typically have policies in place that prevent students from leaving school grounds during school hours to ensure their safety and accountability. These policies require that if a student needs to leave campus, they must be picked up by an adult who is at least 18 years old and is listed on the student's emergency contact list. The adult must also present identification upon pickup. Additionally, if a student must leave for a medical appointment, such as with a doctor or dentist, schools may mandate that a note from the healthcare provider be provided in order for the absence to be considered excused.
