Most schools for students in kindergarten through high school (K-12) have policies that prohibit students from leaving the school grounds or campus during school hours. If students do need to leave the campus they will usually be required to be picked up by an adult (age 18 or older) who is on the student’s emergency contact list and who shows identification at the time of pickup.

For a doctor or dentist appointment schools may require a note from the health care provider for the student’s absence to be excused.

In Alabama, K-12 schools typically have policies in place that prevent students from leaving school grounds during school hours to ensure their safety and accountability. These policies are often outlined in the student handbook or code of conduct provided by the school district. If a student needs to leave campus for any reason, such as a medical appointment, they are generally required to be signed out by an adult who is listed on the student's emergency contact list. This adult must be at least 18 years old and provide proper identification upon pickup. Additionally, to have the absence excused for medical reasons, schools may request a note from the attending healthcare provider. These policies are designed to maintain a secure educational environment and to comply with state attendance laws, which mandate that schools keep accurate records of student attendance and report truancy as necessary.
