bigamy

Bigamy is the act of marrying one person while being legally married to another. Polygamy is the practice or custom (often religious) of having more than one wife or husband at a time. Most states prohibit a party from having more than one marriage license at a time, and in most states bigamy is a crime.

In Wyoming, bigamy is illegal under state law. According to Wyoming Statutes Section 6-4-401, a person is guilty of bigamy if they knowingly contract or purport to contract a marriage with another person while having a living spouse, or if they cohabit with another person in this state under the appearance of being married. Bigamy in Wyoming is classified as a felony, and those convicted may face penalties including imprisonment, fines, or both. Polygamy, which involves having more than one spouse simultaneously, is also not legally recognized in Wyoming and falls under the prohibition against bigamy. The state does not issue marriage licenses to individuals who are already married, and all parties must be legally eligible to marry to enter into a marriage contract.
