Bigamy is the act of marrying one person while being legally married to another. Polygamy is the practice or custom (often religious) of having more than one wife or husband at a time. Most states prohibit a party from having more than one marriage license at a time, and in most states bigamy is a crime.
In Hawaii, bigamy is illegal under state law. According to Section 572-1 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes, it is prohibited for any person who has a living spouse to marry another person, except in cases where the existing marriage is void, the spouse has been absent for five successive years without being known to be alive, or the spouse is generally considered to be dead. Bigamy in Hawaii is classified as a felony offense. As for polygamy, it is not legally recognized in Hawaii, and the state's laws on marriage explicitly require a monogamous union between two individuals. Therefore, any marriage license issued in Hawaii is only valid for a marriage between two people, and no individual can legally be married to more than one person at the same time in the state.
