Traffic courts (also known as municipal courts) are generally courts that are dedicated to prosecuting and resolving tickets or citations for traffic, parking, driver’s license, liability insurance, defective equipment (headlights, brake lights, turning lights, etc.), and license plate violations. These are usually lower level misdemeanor offenses (as opposed to felony offenses).
In Washington State, traffic courts, often referred to as municipal courts, handle a variety of non-felony traffic-related offenses. These courts deal with infractions such as speeding, running a red light, or parking violations, as well as misdemeanor offenses like driving without a valid license, not having liability insurance, or having defective vehicle equipment. Traffic courts in Washington do not handle felony cases, which are typically reserved for higher courts. The goal of these courts is to process traffic violations efficiently and uphold traffic laws. Penalties can include fines, driving record points, and sometimes mandatory education programs or community service. More serious traffic offenses, such as DUI or reckless driving, may also be handled in these courts but can carry heavier penalties, including jail time.
