In some states, a domestic partnership is a legally recognized relationship between members of a same-sex couple, with rights similar to those of a marriage relationship.
As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, Alabama does not legally recognize domestic partnerships. In Alabama, there is no state-level legal status that provides rights similar to those of marriage for same-sex couples or opposite-sex couples outside of marriage. After the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, same-sex marriage became legal across the United States, including in Alabama. This ruling effectively extended all the state-level rights and responsibilities of marriage to same-sex couples. Therefore, in Alabama, same-sex couples seeking legal recognition of their relationship would typically pursue marriage rather than a domestic partnership or civil union, which are not recognized by the state.
