A civil union is a legally recognized relationship between members of a same-sex couple, with rights similar to those of a marriage relationship.
As of my knowledge cutoff in early 2023, Arizona does not recognize civil unions. In 2014, same-sex marriage became legal in Arizona following a federal court decision. Since the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision in Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, all states are required to license and recognize marriages between same-sex couples on the same terms and conditions as marriages between opposite-sex couples. This effectively rendered the need for a separate civil union status for same-sex couples obsolete in Arizona and across the United States. Therefore, same-sex couples in Arizona have the right to marry and to enjoy all the legal benefits and responsibilities that marriage entails.
