Diversity initiatives—also known as diversity and inclusion initiatives or D&I—are policies and procedures implemented by a business or other organization that are designed to improve workplace and career experiences and outcomes for women and racial and ethnic minorities. Organizations usually begin a diversity initiative with a statement by top management that the initiative is a priority for the organization, and sometimes hire a Director of Diversity & Inclusion or Chief Equality Officer to implement the organization’s goals related to hiring and retention of diverse employees.

In Missouri, as in other states, diversity initiatives are not mandated by state law but are often adopted by organizations to promote inclusivity and equal opportunity within the workplace. These initiatives may include policies and practices aimed at increasing the representation and participation of women, racial and ethnic minorities, and other underrepresented groups. While there is no specific Missouri statute that requires businesses to implement D&I programs, such initiatives may help organizations comply with federal laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Additionally, the Missouri Human Rights Act prohibits discrimination in employment on similar grounds. Organizations in Missouri may choose to appoint a Director of Diversity & Inclusion or a Chief Equality Officer to oversee these efforts and to ensure that hiring, retention, and promotion practices align with both federal and state anti-discrimination laws.
