§463.111. Special prestige license plates; commissioned police officer

A. The secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections shall design and establish a special prestige license plate for active commissioned police officers, provided there is a minimum of one thousand applicants for such plate. The license plate shall be restricted to passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans, and recreational vehicles.

B. Each person who applies for the issuance or renewal of the prestige license plate shall present the following to the secretary in order to qualify for the plate:

(1) A statement on letterhead from the chief official of the employing law enforcement agency stating that the applicant has an active commission in that law enforcement agency at the time of application and has held such commission for at least two consecutive years.

(2) Proof of Police Officer Standards Training completion.

C. An annual fee of twenty-five dollars shall be collected for each plate and forwarded to the board of directors of the Louisiana Law Enforcement Officers memorial. The department shall also collect the regular motor vehicle registration license fee provided in R.S. 47:463 and a handling fee of three dollars and fifty cents to be retained by the department to offset a portion of administrative costs.

D. The department shall establish rules and regulations as are necessary to implement this Section.

E. Upon resignation or termination of a commissioned police officer who has been issued a special prestige license plate pursuant to this Section, the chief official of the employing law enforcement agency from which the person resigned or was terminated by shall provide the secretary a written statement on his letterhead notifying the secretary of such termination or resignation.
